The University Grant Commission, as a responsible educational body, has introduced the Post Graduate Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child to encourage higher education among girls. This scholarship aims to assist single girl children in pursuing their higher studies and to highlight the advantages of having a small family. It specifically targets girls who are the only child in their family, helping to lessen the financial burden of their education. Girls up to 30 years old who wish to start their first year of postgraduate courses are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
Indira Gandhi Scholarship Rewards or Amount:
Successful candidates will receive the scholarship amount as outlined below:
- Each successful candidate will be awarded Rs.36,200 per year for two years, covering the full duration of a Post-Graduation course. Additional expenses such as hostel or medical fees will not be covered by this scholarship.
Eligibility for Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship
To be eligible for the Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship, a student must meet the following criteria:
- The girl student must be the only child in her family.2.
- Students without brothers or those with a twin sister can also apply.3.
- Applicants must be 30 years old or younger at the time of admission to the first year of their PG course.
- Only those who have enrolled in a full-time Master’s Degree program can apply.
The student must be admitted to a university, college, or institution recognized by UGC.
How to Apply for the Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship 2025 Application Form
Once eligibility is confirmed, students can apply for the scholarship by following these steps:
- The National Scholarship Portal will announce the application process in leading newspapers and on the UGC website once a year.
- Any updates will also be posted on the UGC website.
- Eligible candidates can apply online through the official website provided below.
- During the application process, candidates must upload certain documents, including:
- An affidavit on Rs.50 stamp paper, attested by a First Class Magistrate, Gazetted Officer, or SDM.
- An attested copy of the joining report issued to the student.
The applicant is able to check the status of their application online at the UGC website once the registration process has been completed. According to the directives issued by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, possessing an Aadhaar Card is essential for student identification. After a student submits their application to the relevant institution, it is necessary to verify the application online. Any application deemed incomplete will be promptly rejected.
Only those applications that have undergone online verification will be eligible for consideration for the scholarship award.
Selection Procedure for the Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship
An expert committee will oversee the selection process. The total number of scholarships available each year is fixed at 3,000. Annually, 3,000 new scholarships will be granted to students. The successful candidates will receive their scholarships starting from the date they commence their course.
Mandatory Notice & Policies for the Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship
Eligible students may receive this scholarship in conjunction with other scholarships. The institution will not impose any tuition fees on girl students enrolled in the first year of a postgraduate degree program. However, students who enroll in any postgraduate course via distance learning are ineligible for this scholarship scheme. Additionally, if a girl student has a biological brother, she will not qualify for this scholarship under the current guidelines.
All eligible students will receive the scholarship funds through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) method, deposited directly into their bank accounts on an annual basis. To renew the scholarship for the second year, students must demonstrate good conduct and maintain satisfactory attendance. Furthermore, an annual progress report must be submitted by the administrative head of the respective institution for renewal purposes. Should a student fail to advance to the next academic level, the scholarship will be revoked. If a student alters her course of study, the scholarship will also be forfeited from the date of the change.
The implementation and oversight of the Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship Scheme will be conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), and its decisions will be deemed final and binding.
