To usher in a “golden age in arts and culture,” the president intends to dismiss board members including chair David Rubenstein.

In addition to firing the existing chairman and other members of the board of trustees, Donald Trump declared on Friday that he would be taking over as chairman of the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts. kennedy center honors

Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, “We are going to make the Kennedy Centre in Washington, D.C., GREAT AGAIN, at my direction.”

The nation’s national cultural hub, the Kennedy Centre, is managed by a public-private partnership. Eleanor Roosevelt came up with the concept for such a centre in the 1930s, and Congress approved it in 1958. In 1971, it formally opened for business. Actors like Tina Turner and Led Zeppelin have performed at the centre, which is well-known for presenting music, theatre, dance, artwork, and performance art. kennedy center honors

While acknowledging Trump’s Truth Social post, a Kennedy Centre representative noted that the organisation has “received no official communications from the White House regarding changes to our board of trustees.”

According to the spokeswoman, the administration has sent notices of termination to a few board members. kennedy center honors

David Rubenstein, a billionaire philanthropist and co-founder of the private equity firm the Carlyle Group, is currently the chairman of the Kennedy Centre. Rubenstein was scheduled to retire this year after serving in the role since 2010. Following Trump’s election, the Kennedy Centre said that Rubenstein would remain in his position until September 2026 and that it had not been able to recruit a replacement. kennedy center honors

Rubenstein is said to be close to Joe Biden and was a policy adviser to Jimmy Carter. George W. Bush was the one who initially appointed him.

The president usually appoints members to the board of trustees. According to the Hill, the board currently includes singer Lee Greenwood, lobbyist Brian Ballard, and attorney general Pam Bondi, all of whom are Trump supporters. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is one of several Biden appointments who remain on the board. Congress has the authority to appoint ex-officio members, and first women are honorary members.

According to a Kennedy Centre representative, the organisation has “a bipartisan board of trustees that has supported the arts in a non-partisan fashion” and “we have had a collaborative relationship with every presidential administration.” kennedy center honors

According to the 1958 act approved by Congress, Rubenstein’s position—which Trump claims he is presently occupying—has always been chosen by the center’s board members.

According to a centre representative, “nothing in the center’s statute would prevent a new administration from replacing board members.” But this would be the first time the board of the Kennedy Centre has taken such a step. kennedy center honors

According to Trump, Rubenstein and a few other board members were fired because they didn’t “share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture.” He also addressed queer people in his Truth Social post, an issue he has taken up over and time again since taking office, claiming that the Kennedy Centre “featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth – THIS WILL STOP.”

Trump’s decision to name himself chairman of the Kennedy Centre was initially reported by The Atlantic. Unlike previous US presidents, Obama did not attend any of the center’s yearly gala events during his first term. Following artists’ protests against his administration and threats to boycott events, Trump’s relationship with the centre became strained.

Each year, individuals in the performing arts receive the Kennedy Centre Honours in recognition of their lifelong contributions to American culture. Since 1978, they have been given every year, culminating in a gala honouring five Honourees in the Kennedy Centre Opera House in Washington, D.C., every December. Although the majority of the recipients are individuals, the awards have also been granted to musical ensembles or duos on occasion, as well as to one Broadway production, one television program, and one performing arts venue.
