About: Padma Awards

Padma Awards 2025 #. One of the nation’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Awards are given out in three different categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. Art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, the civil service, and other professions and fields of endeavor are among the many areas in which the awards are granted. “Padma Bhushan” is given for distinguished service of high order, “Padma Shri” is given for distinguished service in any field, and “Padma Vibhushan” is given for extraordinary and distinguished service. Each year, the honors are presented in honor of Republic Day.
The President of India bestows these honors during formal events that take place at Rashtrapati Bhawan, typically in March or April each year. According to the list below, the President has authorized the 139 Padma Awards for 2025, including one dual case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). There are 113 Padma Shri Awards, 19 Padma Bhushans, and 7 Padma Vibhushans on the list. There are 13 posthumous winners, 10 individuals from the foreigner/NRI/PIO/OCI category, and 23 women on the list.

What are the Key Facts about Padma Awards?
- One of India’s highest civilian honors, the Padma Awards are given out every year on the eve of Republic Day.
- The award is granted for outstanding and noteworthy accomplishments or services in all areas of endeavors or disciplines in an effort to honor works of distinction.
- Padma Awards were instituted in 1954.
- The award is presented in three different categories:
- Padma Shri for distinguished service.
- Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high level.
- Padma Vibhushan for extraordinary and distinguished service.
Award: A medallion and a Sanad, or certificate, signed by the president are given to the recipients.
Eligibility for Padma Awards:
- These prizes are open to everyone, regardless of gender, color, occupation, or rank.
- With the exception of physicians and scientists, government employees, including those employed by PSUs, are not eligible for these awards.
- Typically, the honor is not given posthumously. However, the government can think about making an award posthumously in circumstances that are extremely deserved.
- The award cannot be used as a prefix or suffix to the awardee’s name, nor does it constitute a title.
Who is eligible to nominate?
Central Ministries/Departments, State/UT Governments, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna recipients, and Institutes of Excellence are all asked to submit nominations.
Nominations and recommendations, including self-nomination, are open to all citizens.
Who Makes the Decision?
The Padma Awards Committee, which is annually established by the Prime Minister, reviews all nominees for the Padma Awards.
The Padma Awards are presented on the eve of Republic Day based on the Awards Committee’s recommendations and with the consent of the President, Prime Minister, and Home Minister.
